Working with what I've got

IMG_4233
I haven't posted any "what I wore" type photos in a very long time, and I'm not really into selfies, so this feels a little weird...

I'm making a really big effort this year to work with the clothes that I already have in my closet.  I'm often guilty of buying something new, wearing it a few times, and then tossing it to the side.  One of my goals for this year is to keep my clothing/accessories spending very low.  I think I've been doing pretty good with that over the last few years, really, but there have definitely been occasions where I bought things that I didn't need simply because the price was right (I have a weakness for inexpensive tops, in particular).

As much as I love buying new clothes, it seems wasteful right now.  There are too many other things that we need and want to spend our money on.  Cheap, fast fashion is hard to resist from stores like Target and Forever 21, but I know that I have a closet full of items that are just as cute today as they were when I bought them, and that's what I should be wearing.  I certainly don't begrudge anyone else from shopping often from those stores, but for me, it's almost like a bad habit that I need to stop.  It's easy to avoid when I'm in Bulgaria, and in fact, I pretty much didn't shop at all during my first 9 month stretch here.  When I'm back in the states, that's when the trouble begins!

I bought this sweater back in November and it quickly became a favorite.  The plaid shirt was a Christmas gift from my sister, and I have been wearing it constantly.  It's perfect for layering and very versatile, so I can see it working through all four seasons.  The hat and the jeans are from Forever 21 and I've had them for several years now, so I guess I'm not doing too bad after all.

I loved the post title, pictures and your idea of wear what you have.  Thanks so much for joining up with WW :)

  2. I have been trying to cut back on shopping as well. It helps that there is no cheap store near me so there is little temptation, but still, it feels better to explore your closet first before buying new stuff.

    That sweater is so lovely!

  3. Such a cute outfit.  I have a plaid shirt, and I agree...it's so perfect for layering.

I have started shopping my closet more (thank you, Pinterest and blog for inspiration!) and love it.  Good luck with doing the same in yours!

  6. I love the color combo you have going here!

I have the same bad habit, and really started working on getting out of it this past month with a clothes-shopping ban.

  10. I totally know what you mean about buying something, wearing it like 3 times, and then going "....why in the world did I buy this?' If nothing else, documenting what I wear has really made me experiment more with what I already have. I hope you keep up with the selfie documentation :)

  14. I'm also doing the same thing trying to use what I've got. And if I'm honest, I've got a lot. Now whether I want to wear it or not is different. I find I always reach for the same stuff.

Love the plaid and the sweater. You look great.

  15. Thank you!  I definitely do the same thing, always end up wearing the same things over and over again while the rest just hangs out in the closet forever.
